Workshop overview

Session 1

In the first introductory session, we will begin with a brief exploration of the eye anatomy and eye movements, focusing on the eye-mind connection, setting the conceptual groundwork and shared terminology that will guide our discussions. We will then outline the evolution eye tracking technology, from early systems to modern remote and wearable video-based systems using infrared and corneal reflection techniques. We will end with an overview of reading‑based eye tracking research fundamentals, highlighting key aspects and cognitive interpretation.

To acquire some background before the course and familiarize with eye tracking terminology, here is a recommend reading:

Session 2

In a second practical session, we will walk through the steps and challenges of designing an eye tracking experiment: selecting tasks, stimuli, timing protocols, and material constraints, while learning strategies to minimize noise and ensure data validity. We will also discuss typical eye tracking software workflows, covering key features like calibration, fixation/saccade detection, major gaze data visualization techniques, etc. We will end the session with a collaborative (pair/group) mini-project where you will brainstorm and sketch your own experimental design suited to eye‑tracking (you are more than welcome to tailor this project to your own study or research challenge).

Pre-registration: If you are a PhD student, please pre-register by filling out the following form. Your pre-registration will help us determine how much space we need to reserve. Please do not register if you are not sure you can attend on both days (Wednesdays, 17 September 2025 and 24 September 2025, 3:00-4:30 p.m.).
The programme will recognise attendance as a specific training activity.
